Age-Related Fertility Changes

How age changes fertility — and what a proactive plan can look like.

What changes with age

Fertility gradually declines with age, and the pace of change differs among individuals. Egg quantity and quality both change, and the change is not linear. Ovarian reserve testing gives a snapshot; it does not predict a specific timeline.

Planning proactively

Options include testing to understand where you are now, elective fertility preservation, and starting treatment earlier when goals justify it. Your physician will discuss trade-offs specific to you rather than a general age-based rule.

This page is for general education and is not a substitute for medical advice. Treatment recommendations depend on a physician evaluation, diagnosis, age, medical history, ovarian reserve, sperm parameters, reproductive goals, and other patient-specific factors. If you are having a medical emergency, call 911.
